SALAM involvement in helping orang asli community in Hulu Selangor started back in 2001. Many ad-hoc and small scale volunteer activities carried out throughout the years, until recent years when brought in water and electricity supply and setting up of mini library in Serendah, shown significant impact. Education and poverty are the main issues facing orang asli communities in Hulu Selangor. Recent community assessment by our volunteer group with samples from Serendah shows that illiteracy rate among the children and adults are very high compared to national average. Illiterate adults are understandable as most of them did not go to school. However, most of the children should have gone through primary and secondary education at government schools.
This is a collaboration and partnership between Fonterra and Yayasan Salam together with the Jabatan Kemajuan Orang Asli (JAKOA), the targeted community are children from Kampung Pertak, Kuala Kubu Bharu, which involves 70 children ranging from 1-12 years of age. The objectives of the project cultivating interest in education through a systematic and creative educational approach and raising awareness of the importance of health and nutrition through health-related initiatives including food distribution and fun outdoor activities.
