Mama Langat Bakery is a project started few years ago with a small sponsorship from Petronas Gas Bhd, which is one of the subsidiaries of the national oil company and have been coordinate by Yayasan Salam Malaysia ever since. This project is initiated to help single mothers become entrepreneurs who could stand on their own two feet. Mama Langat is a group of single mother who have been trained to produce variety of cakes and pastries.
Some of them includes sweet cheese round buns, red bean buns, sausage buns, sausage rolls, cookies and various type of cakes. Before joining the program, they also produce and sell malay cakes, such as curry puff, kueh koci, apam, kueh talam, fried popiah and seri muka. Most of the pastries are sold at a number of petrol kiosks, corporate offices, restaurants and cafes. They also dreamt of participating in food exhibitions and preparing to introduce barcode labeling into their own packaging.
Puan Salwah Bt Sayuti: She is a 45 years old single mother who lives at Taman Indah Jaya, Batu 14 Hulu Langat, “Whenever i joined the class, my heart felt so happy. Because I am able to meet new friends and learned new skills. Before I joined the class, I didn’t even know how to bake but not anymore. Besides baking, I also learned how to create and use facebook account, basic business knowledge and how to sell product. Everything I do is so exciting”
