Volunteers
VOLUNTEERING INVOLVES YOU sharing your knowledge and skills with individuals or communities in need with no expectation of reward or gain. When you volunteer, the community you work with benefits from the assistance you have given or the knowledge you have imparted. You, in turn, benefit from the experience of sharing and learning from the community you have worked with.

Volunteering is different from charity work. Charity involves one party giving and the other party receiving, Volunteering, however, is a partnership arrangement that benefits both parties.

SALAM recognises two categories of volunteer work: full-time and part-time. Any Malaysian above 18 years old can apply to be a SALAM volunteer. You should:

  • enjoy working with and helping other people
  • be able to communicate and mix well with others
  • be prepared to endure some inconvenience and hardship
  • preferably have a skill or useful experience you can share with others
  • be willing to learn
  • be prepared to make a full-time commitment

Salam volunteers come from all walks of life. You may be a fresh graduate from university and college, a mid-career professional, a business entrepreneur, a retiree, a housewife. Or anyone who has some skill or work experience you can usefully share with others. All volunteers will be required to undergo an orientation programme organised by SALAM.

Regional Marketing Manager

"Sure, I've worked hard to be where I am. But it's been some rat race. I need to restore some balance to my life, give instead of take all the time. Being a volunteer is my way of making sense of all that I've achieved."

David Lee
Regional Marketing Manager
