And you may discover a new you in the process!Welcome to the world of volunteer effort! Join the many others who have expressed a desire to spend a part of their lives in volunteer service. We hope you will find the opportunity to do this under SALAM's programme. To be sure, many people want to work as volunteers, but obviously not everyone is suited or qualified to become a volunteer. Who makes a good volunteer? How does one become a SALAM volunteer? To be a SALAM volunteer, you must be at least 18 years old, and in good health. But that alone is not enough. There are other factors you have to take into account. First, do you have the right attitude and temperament? Volunteering essentially involves the giving of time and service to others without any expectation of gain or reward. It requires a spirit of sacrifice, patience, and a willingness to share your skill, knowledge or talent with others. It requires an ability to work with other people, usually in environments you are not familiar with, forgoing many of the physical comforts you may have come to take for granted, and very often doing things you are not used to. Are you prepared for all this? Are you mentally strong enough to cope with the inconvenience and difficulties you may encounter at work? It usually takes time and lots of patience before you can work effectively in a new environment. People have to get used to you and trust you, and you in turn must be prepared to reach out to them and establish a working rapport. An ability to communicate and get along with people is extremely important. More so if you are thinking of an overseas posting, where language, culture and work styles may be different. Do you have the stamina and the determination to continue until your assignment is over? ![]() Second, you should remind yourself that volunteer work requires you to give up some of your own time for others. It could be time you normally spend with your friends and family or time devoted to advancing your career or business, or just plain leisure time you normally reserve for yourself. Can you really spare the time required for volunteer work? Are your other responsibilities and needs adequately taken care of? Third, do you have any specific skill, experience or qualification which communities in need might find useful? If you have, it is a plus. Having a college or university education usually helps, especially if you have acquired some useful skill in the process. But this is not a must. Skills can also be acquired through work experience or learning on the job. The point is, the more skilled you are and the more relevant experience you have, the more useful you will be as a volunteer and there will be a greater demand for your services. So. Are you confident enough to share your skills and knowledge with others? If your answer to these questions is a big YES, then you are likely to be a good candidate for SALAM. |
